How to rent a car in Spain – a short, honest guide

This guide is for anyone planning to rent a car on the Costa Blanca and wants to know what really applies — not just what the marketing says. We've run our rentals in Spain since we set up here, and these are the things to know before you pick up the keys.

Age limit and driver's licence

The main driver must usually be at least 21 and have held a valid driver's licence for at least one year. EEA and international licences are accepted. Bring your passport or national ID as well.

Deposit and payment

At Costavia we typically don't require a deposit, and you pay on pick-up or in advance. Big international chains often block several hundred euros on your card — check this before comparing prices.

Insurance and excess

All cars include Spanish third-party liability insurance. For a lower excess in case of damage you can add extended coverage. "Free CDW" promised online rarely covers tyres, undercarriage or windscreen without an add-on.

Fuel and charging

Cars are normally supplied with a full tank and returned full. Diesel ("gasóleo") and petrol ("gasolina 95/98") are clearly marked — check the cap before fuelling. EV/hybrid options are available on request.

Tolls and motorways

On the Costa Blanca the AP-7 and A-7 are largely toll-free now. Further north some tolls remain — keep a card ready or use a Vía-T tag if fitted.

Pick-up at Alicante airport

We meet you near Alicante airport (ALC) or at the Costavia office in Ciudad Quesada. The car is ready, fuelled and clean. Everything is explained in your language and we're available on WhatsApp throughout the rental.
